Right out of the box, the new 2019 Jeep Wrangler JL and JL Unlimited are already one of the most capable off-road vehicles you can buy. However, as covered previously on our website, you can always improve on the performance of certain OEM components, especially suspension, as the engineers and OEM manufacturers are on a tighter budget with parts like suspension than aftermarket products. So, as with most Jeep Wrangler buyers, the first thing you will want to upgrade, is the suspension, not only providing more off-road capability, but also on-road comfort, street and highway performance. So, here are our recommendations, and reviews on the various kits available and what we recommend, in no particular order:
For the budget conscious, looking for added lift to clear larger tires without breaking the bank, we start off with the entry level 2.5 inch Rough Country 67700 lift kit, consisting of:
FRONT: Coil spring spacers, Shock relocation brackets, Sway bar links, bump stops, Hardware; REAR: Coil spring spacers, Shock relocation brackets, Sway bar links, bump stops, Hardware.
This is ideal for individuals not too unhappy with the original stock factory suspension kit dynamics that came with the vehicle, but are just looking for some added lift for more clearance or to fit larger tires. The performance and handling will be similar to standard, however the center of gravity will be slightly higher so be wary of your slightly decreased off-camber angle that can be driven before rolling over.
Taking it a step further, and moving up to this kit from Rough Country that is also 2.5 inch lift, but adds the better performance shock absorbers, to improve comfort, heat dissipation on corrugated or bumpy roads, and improved rebound control. Still very good value for money, but does not improve the articulation or usable travel of the suspension.
Third step up, is also a 2.5 inch kit from Rough Country, but with this kit, the new added Rough Country coil springs also add additional suspension articulation, more control around corners preventing less body roll, and usable additional travel.
This right here is the next level in lift. This kit takes the lift height up to 3.5 inches, and when going higher than 2.5 inches, suspension linkages start to become out of alignment, and this can lead to all sorts of steering and wear problems. So with a kit of this height, you need to start compensating with the control arms. This kit addresses that issue but also including the brackets, that drop your control arm mounting point, where they mount to the frame, this brings their angles back into designed specifications so that your vehicles handling and articulation is not negatively impacted by the lift.
